Wake up everybody fue un gran éxito de Harold Melvin & Bluenotes en el año 1975, en plena época de la música disco. Cuando muchas otras canciones no incitaban más que a mover el cuerpo, Wake Up Everybody era un llamamiento al despertar de todos para sacar al guetto adelante. Recogía así la tradición social que muchos otros grupos y cantantes mantuvieron dentro de una música que se iba convirtiendo en más y más comercial. En esta ocasión, se convirtió en un apoyo musical para movilizar a la gente en la campaña electoral norteamericana en favor del presidente Obama.
